Just like how people react differently to different types of foods, so are birds. It can be wonderful and a lot of fun sharing food with your bird but there are many common human foods that can be harmful or even fatal to it. 1. Avocado
It contains a fungicidal toxin known as persin which is said to cause cardinal poison, especially to budgies and canaries birds. Death can also occur after two days after ingestion.

2. Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which causes diarrhea, increased heart rate,
vomiting, induce tremors, and also seizure, it can lead to the death of the bird.

3. Caffeine
Caffeine causes an increase in heart rate, hyperactivity; it can also induce arrhythmias and lead to the cardiac arrest of the bird.

4. Onion and garlic
Unlike in humans where the two add nutritive value in birds, both onion and garlic are toxic. For
instance, onion contains sulfur components which irritate the lining of the mouth and esophagus, causing the red blood cells to rupture as a result leading to anemia. It can also cause
ulcers. On the other hand, garlic contains a chemical called allicin, which causes weakness and

5. Fats
Just like in humans’ fatty foods such as butter, fatty meats, nuts, and oil when consumed by the
birds, it leads to an increase in cholesterol levels and triglyceride resulting in coronary artery
disease. Most susceptible birds to fats include Quaker parrots and Amazon.

6. Salt
Just like too much salt is not suitable for humans, so it is for birds. Even a small amount of salt can upset like a little bird. Salt causes dehydration, intensified thirst, kidney failure, and even death. Salt affects the bird by this interfering with the electrolyte and body fluid balance.

Thus it’s important to be aware of the toxic foods for birds to keep them safe. Providing birds with proper foods which include; carrot stick, pea pod, water, mango, etc would be very healthy for them. But, fruits that contain seeds e.g. apples and those that have pits, e.g., apricot should be given to the bird without them since they contain cyanide which causes the cardiac toxin to the birds.
